100 Years Ago – March 17, 1921
Essays invited on cream separator — The Putnam Hardware Company is offering $25 in prizes to the boys and girls in Houlton. The contest is writing an essay about the new Primrose Cream Separator, telling what is and what it is used for and how to run it properly.
Houlton racing stables filled — When the racing season of 1920 ended and the returns were all in, Houlton followers of the sport were pleased to note that the stables of horses trained and driven by Harry Nevers of Houlton had won more money than any other Maine or New Brunswick string.
75 Years Ago – March 13, 1946
Chiropractors move to Portland — After 25 years of practicing here in Houlton, Drs. Hoy and Hoy have closed their offices in town and have moved to Portland, where they will continue their chiropractic work.
High school play — The senior class of Island Falls High School presented the three act comedy play “All on Account of Luella,” March 6 in the Grange Hall before a big audience.
50 Years Ago – March 17, 1971
Tidd named manager at Grossman’s — Grossman’s, a 75-year-old lumber and building materials company, has announced that Shirley Tidd of Houlton is now the manager of the Houlton store, in which he started out as a salesman three years ago.
Merchants prepare for Riddikulus Days — Riddikulus Dyas, a sales event that proved to be very popular to shoppers in Houlton is living up to its name, according to Jim Cole, chairman of the Retail Trade Board. Many merchants are participating in the three-day sales event and are offering outstanding deals and values.
25 Years Ago – March 13, 1996
Jazz festival coming to County March 15 — The Maine State Instrumental Jazz Festival will be held March 15 at the Caribou High School. Junior high bands in three divisions will vie for trophies.
Nursing scholarship — Hayward-Frazier Post 2599 VFW Ladies Auxiliary presented a scholarship check for Roanne Morgan, a Northern Maine Technical College practical nursing student, earlier this month. This was the first scholarship in what the group plans as an annual event. Ruth Munson, nursing scholarship chairperson presented the award.
